Thursday 28 June 2007 saw the passing of my dear and wonderful Gran who was in her 94th year. Her body had just had enough and she passed gently, quietly and peacefully into Gods hands. I am sure that Pop was waiting for her there with a cup of tea and a slice in hand. Now they are off on another caravanning adventure. They are now both watching over us.
The funeral was held back in her home town where she was laid to rest with the rest of her family (she was the last of her generation) and our beloved Pop. While it was a sad occasion for those of us here on earth, and especially for Dad who was an only child, I think there was relief for Gran too. Family and friends all joined us on the day.
For me I was so pleased that I was able to view Gran before she was laid to rest and to see the calm on her face and admire her beauty. It was my decision and one Dad had left to each of us 3 girls to decide. For me it was a case of closure. It also helped me to deliver my eulogy on behalf of my sisters - one of the things I did as the big sister. I would have made it through without tears if I hadn't looked to them for reassurance. When I said the goodbye with the famous (in our family) "double handed Gran wave" and saw the tears on my sisters face it was hard to go on. What was reassuring was to see Grans great grandchildren as part of the ceremony, sitting and participating and being part of this occasion. I was so proud of them all.
The final lowering was hard for those of us still here as it really brought Grans life to a conclusion. The lowering was done by 2 of Dads cousins and 2 grandsons in laws - one of them being Peter. At the graveside Mario took a piece of wattle and gently dropped it on the coffin for me. While he may not understand the gesture, he made my heart melt. It was a time for tears for me.
The wake afterwards was very Gran - we made all her slices, served up on Gran plates, and even had her lollies on hand that we use to nibble on as kids. It was a day of memories.
We love you Gran so much and you are forever in our hearts.
